QS is a position that directly affects the success of projects and works in the Construction industry. In fact, the name QS is often confused with other important terms in the same field such as QA, QC. Let’s find out what QS is and how to distinguish QS from the above terms in the following article!

1. What is QS?

What is Quality surveyor ? QS (Quality Surveyor) – A cost estimating engineer is responsible for estimating and controlling costs for construction projects, ensuring that works meet quality and legal standards. QS engineers are involved in every stage of a construction project, from planning through to completion.

Cost control is crucial to the success of a project. Costs exceeding the estimated budget will cause damage to the project owner and related parties, directly affecting the progress and quality of the project. Preventing this problem is the responsibility of the QS engineer in Construction.

2. What is the job of a QS Engineer?

Taking on an important role in construction projects, QS engineers are responsible for working with both the Project Management Board and the construction unit. For each party, the QS engineer will have to perform specific tasks such as:

2.1 For the Project Management Board

For the Project Management Board, the duties of QS engineers are:

– Determining project budget: Analyzing project requirements and objectives to forecast overall costs.

– Cost planning: Developing a specific cost plan to manage spending.

– Cost management: Track costs and report spending progress to the Project Management Board.

– Cost controling: Detect and resolve cost-related issues to optimize budget.

– Change proposal evaluating: Evaluate the impact of change proposals on the project budget.

– Bidding: Participate in the bidding process and help the Project Management Board select suitable contractors.

– Contract development: QS Engineer helps Project Management Board develop contracts with contractors, ensuring cost-related conditions are clearly agreed upon.

2.2 For Construction Contractors

Regarding the construction contractor, the QS engineer will:

– Calculating costs and preparing quotes for construction projects, participate in preparing bidding documents and quotes for customers.

– Appraising bidding documents to make decisions on project feasibility and calculate construction costs.

– Making construction plan, propose construction plan suitable with estimated cost and time, monitor construction progress and ensure work is carried out according to plan.

– Controling costs, propose reasonable solutions to minimize costs and increase work efficiency.

– Checking and paying contracts to contractors, partners or employees related to the project.

– Project progress preparing and results reports help contractors and customers have a clear view of the project’s progress and effectiveness.

3. Distinguishing QS, QA, QC in Construction

In the field of Construction industry, QS, QA, QC are familiar terms in ensuring the quality and progress of construction projects. However, these three terms are completely different and there is still much confusion between QS, QA, QC.

3.1 What is QA ?

In the construction industry, a Quality Assurance (QA) Engineer is a position that ensures the quality of a contractor’s or project owner’s products or services. To achieve this goal, they will establish procedures, standards and regulations to ensure that the product or service meets the given quality requirements and avoid errors or defects from occurring.

3.2 What is QC?

A Quality Control (QC) specialist is someone who ensures the quality of products and services to meet predetermined standards. This position will conduct testing; measure and analyze product/service quality to determine the difference between actual results and set standards, thereby providing appropriate solutions.

4.3 What are the similarities and differences between QA, QC, QS?
